Nurse Rotation

Burdett CHaL Nurse Rotation Programme

In 2018, CHaL launched the Burdett Nurse Rotation Programme, a three-year programme generously funded by The Burdett Trust for Nursing. Working alongside hospice teams, statutory services and academic partners, the project provides opportunities for nurses to rotate between organisations and experience nursing children with life threatening or life limiting conditions wherever they receive their care : hospice, home and acute care facilities. Alongside the practical experience there are also formal learning opportunities for participants. Academic partners are working with us to monitor the programme and develop a tool to measure and increase the resilience of our teams and organisations.

The project is intended to improve children’s palliative care by: increasing nurses’ understanding of the journey children and families face within services; developing nursing skills, knowledge and confidence; facilitating opportunities to build strong working networks with colleagues across services; and showcasing children’s palliative care as an attractive workplace with excellent development opportunities. With awareness of the growing demand on services and a desire to reach more children and families, we are working together to create a comprehensive programme that will entice new recruits and help us retain and develop our current team members.
